We hope that 2018 is going to be a year of #unleashingawesome for all of us.

It seems to have become habitual for people to begin a new year with resolutions, goals and realigning of aspirations. One of our goals for 2018 is to continue helping our customers and those around us to unleash their awesome wherever they can.

We’re doing this in a number of ways, the most obvious to those that know the team at join.the.dots is through Media Skills TrainingPublic Speaking and Presentation Skills Training, Body Language Training and Crisis Communication Training and Workshopping.

With that in mind we thought we’d share some highlights from 2017 with you, sort of a year-that-was in our world.

Dealing with media

2017 certainly had its fair share of drama. It’s hard to believe just how much media coverage was given over to a person who pays less attention to facts, figures and truth than he does his suits.

There has also been a growing climate of confrontation in the media and just when you thought you had seen the most confrontational interview on TV, there is always room for something more embarrassing. The video is 12:36 minutes with real argy-bargy from 6:40. Are you ready to deal with a confrontational journalist?

2017 also showed us a few awesome how Not To’s. One of the most enlightening is probably from the White House spokesperson Kelly Anne Conway and how practically everything she did in her time with President Trump destroyed her credibility with media outlets across the US.

Another beaut of a specimen, this time courtesy of the UK’s Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs Boris Johnson, about just how important facts actually are.

We could go on with how “Not To” examples but instead, get in touch and we’ll show you how to win when dealing with the media.

Public Speaking and Presentations

2017 saw no shortage of engaging and insightful talks and speeches being delivered across the world. We particularly enjoy this style of talking – self-effacing and yet not-completely humble-but seemingly-quite-honest. This is Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan talking “Thoughts on humanity, fame and love” at TED 2017.

A counterintuitive topic title is a great first step on the path to audience engagement. This one from Emily Esfahani Smith – “There’s more to life than being happy” fits the bill.

We have a special place in our rock ‘n roll speaker’s hall of fame for Tim Ferriss. His talk at TED 2017 is not quite his best but his vulnerability, honesty and insight make this talk worth watching – “Why you should define your fears instead of your goals”.

Ease is a greater threat to progress than hardship, so keep moving, keep growing, keep learning”. That’s a quote from Denzel Washington’s acceptance speech for the NAACP Image Award from the American National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

We say yes to #keepmoving #keepgrowing #keeplearning

Cool quote: “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” Peter Drucker
